VANCOUVER, British Columbia—Ubuntu Linux is now available on phones in China, with a new high-end device from Meizu. Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical, the lead commercial sponsor of Ubuntu Linux, discussed and briefly demonstrated the new phone for eWEEK during an event at the OpenStack Summit here.

The first commercially available Ubuntu Phone debuted in Europe back in February of this year from phone vendor BQ. The new phone in China is built by Meizu and is described by Shuttleworth as being a high-end phone with a faster processor and a larger screen.

Shuttleworth said that he was delighted and surprised that the Meizu Ubuntu Phone is now available in China. He noted that the announcement was pushed up by several months due to demand and developer interest.

“So we are now live in Europe and China,” Shuttleworth said. “We’re super excited.”
