VeriSign Inc. on Tuesday announced a new partnership with Microsoft Corp. under which the registrar and security company will provide security services for Microsofts Windows Powered Smartphone software.

The centerpiece of the agreement is a code-signing service that will be available to any developer who writes code for the Smartphone platform. Using the VeriSign service, developers will be able to digitally sign their applications, which should help prevent malicious or unauthorized code from running on devices using the Smartphone software.

The Smartphone platform, Microsofts new operating system for wireless phones, combines voice and data functionality with gaming, multimedia and personal information management features. The company launched the OS Tuesday at an event in London.

The code-signing service, which VeriSign, based in Mountain View, Calif., and Microsoft, of Redmond, Wash., collaborated on, is based on an existing service that VeriSign offers to other developers.

In a related announcement, wireless security vendor Certicom Corp. said its movianVPN product will now support the Smartphone platform. MovianVPN is the Mississauga, Ontario, companys mobile virtual private network solution.
