Acer America Corp. next week will continue the expansion of its product line with its next rack-mount server, the two-processor Altos R701.

The 2U (3.5-inch) server—powered by 2.8GHz Xeon chips with application-enhancing Hyper-Threading technology from Intel Corp. and up to 512KB Level 2 cache, 12GB of DDR266 RAM and six 64-bit PCI-X slots—is aimed at businesses with demands for high bandwidth, including Internet service providers, application service providers and enterprises, according to officials with the San Jose, Calif., company.

It also will include a dual-channel Gigabit LAN, optional SCSI RAID support and a four-fan cooling system that enables it to keep cool regardless of the task its working on, they said. It will support Microsoft Corp.s Windows 2000 and 2003, Windows 2000 and 2003 Advanced Servers, Novell Inc.s NetWare 6.0, Red Hat Inc.s Linux 8.0 and the SCO Groups UnixWare 7.1.1 operating systems.

It will be available next week starting at $2,898.

The R701 is part of Acers push to expand its offerings beyond PCs and laptops and re-establish itself in the the enterprise space, particularly small and mid-sized businesses with server and storage offerings. The initiative mirrors similar ones being made by such companies as Gateway Inc., of Poway, Calif., and Nampa, Idaho-based MPC Computers LLC. Acer in May released its first rack-mount server, the 1U (1.75-inch) Altos R300. The company also is expecting to roll out two new storage devices in the second quarter of 2004.
