Hewlett-Packard is getting a boost from one its processor partners—AMD.
Advanced Micro Devices is purchasing more than more than 700 HP ProLiant BL465c blade servers, a Hewlett-Packard spokesperson said Nov. 21.
These servers, which use HPs Blade System c-Class architecture, already use AMDs dual-core Opteron processors.
The Sunnyvale, Calif., chip maker said it was looking for a system of blades to help its silicon design team develop and design the architecture of its chips, the circuitry of the chips and a number of verification jobs in these projects.
This is the first time that AMD is deploying blades within its engineering design unit. AMD officials said the blades will offer an increased performance-by-watt of up to 30 percent compared to standard rack-mounted servers.
HP, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif., was one of the first OEMs to begin offering Opteron dual-core processors in its servers and its blades.
On June 14, HP rolled out its Blade System c-Class architecture, which the company touted as having improved density and management features, while cutting down on power costs.
The blades will be installed in AMDs Sunnyvale and Boxborough, Mass., research facilities. The new servers will also help projects in Texas, Colorado and India.
