BMC Software is looking to greatly expand its presence in the data center by buying data center automation provider BladeLogic for $800 million.

BMC, a pioneer and market leader in the business service management space, announced its intentions March. 17. The company will compete even more fiercely with rival Hewlett-Packard, pitting BladeLogic against HP’s Opsware acquisition for dominance in the fast growing data center automation market.

With the rise of virtualization in the data center and the growing complexity of managing heterogeneous data center environments, both vendors are aiming to help enterprise customers lower operational costs.

“Organizations around the world will spend more than $140 billion dollars this year running data centers,” Bob Beauchamp, BMC’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “Automation is the only way IT can bring this spending under control and still meet the reliability and time-to-market requirements of their businesses. BMC’s acquisition of BladeLogic … is a natural and very significant next step in our vision of Business Service Management.”

BMC has already created initial integration between its BSM platform and BladeLogic’s data center automation technology.
