Dell Touts New PowerEdge Quad-core Servers

Dell has unleashed two new PowerEdge servers-the R300 and T300-that it claims perform up to 31 percent better than comparable Hewlett-Packard servers and up to 51 percent better than similar servers from IBM. Dell is also claiming that the new servers have up to three times the memory capacity and are thus better suited to handle memory-intensive applications that smaller businesses stake their existences on, such as Microsoft Exchange.

Recession be damned: Dell on March 18 announced the new servers with a show of bravado, saying that even amid economic concerns in some parts of the world, server revenue is holding strong, with seven quarters of consecutive growth. Dell has experienced three times the average market growth, said Barry Jennings, chief researcher for Dell’s Small and Medium Business group.

Jennings said a recent 12-country survey of Dell customers showed that eliminating server slowdowns and failures is a top motivator for the still-healthy server market.
