Computer makers Gateway Inc. and Acer America Corp. are rolling out desktops armed with Intel Corp.s 865G chip set.

The companies joined most other PC manufacturers this week in launching machines that take advantage of many of the new features in the chip set—code-named Springdale—and the processor, including Hyper-Threading technology and an 800MHz front-side bus for faster communication between the chip and its components.

Hyper-Threading enables a single chip to work as two virtual chips, improving application performance by as much as 30 percent, according to officials at Intel, of Santa Clara, Calif.

Gateway, of Poway, Calif., announced the 500S, aimed at consumers and small businesses. Pricing for the desktop, which will be available this weekend, is $999.

Gateway officials said they will incorporate the Springdale chip set in the companys line of business PCs—the E-Series of managed desktops, the Sb-Series for small businesses and the all-in-one Profile 4 PCs—in early June.

Acer America, of San Jose, Calif., released the Veriton 7600G, which includes support for up to eight USB 2.0 ports and five PCI slots for peripherals and expansion cards. It also supports a Serial ATA hard drive, and offers either an 8x AGP graphics card or integrated Intel Extreme Graphics technology.

In addition, the system has a single-button restoration capability that will restore its preloaded factory settings without the user having to install a recovery CD, officials.

Pricing for the desktop starts at $949.
