Network and applications monitoring vendor Micromuse Ltd. today said it will buy network analysis software maker RiverSoft Technologies Ltd.. in an all-cash deal valued at $64 million. The deal will give Micromuse, maker of the Netcool suite of assurance tools, access to RiverSofts flagship NMOS network intelligence engine, officials said.

Greg Brown, Micromuses chairman and CEO said more and more, users are looking for both root cause analysis tools and overall performance monitoring capabilities from a single source.

By acquiring RiverSoft, Micromuse officials said the Netcool suite will grow to include comprehensive inventory management as the NMOS network intelligence engine expands Netcools Layer 2 and Layer 3 IP network discovery technology into ATM/frame relay and MPLS. Netcool will also gain a new visual tool joining network performance with business services status. The combination of NMOS and Netcool will also offer faster and more accurate identification and resolution of problems, enabled by an automated delivery of root-cause information, officials said.

“We expect the RiverSoft technology to enhance our ability to discover and correlate inter-layer IP, ATM, frame relay and MPLS problems quickly, while also providing a platform to model and manage abstract services and applications,” Suhas Uliyar, Micromuses vice president for product management, said in a statement. “Like Netcool, NMOS is able to scale as network infrastructures grow–a key function for managing the complexities in todays service provider and large-scale enterprises.”

The boards of Micromuse and RiverSoft have reached an agreement on the terms of a recommended cash offer. Micromuse U.K. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Micromuse, will make the offer.
