Spanish banking giant BBVA and OpenAI have teamed up for an ambitious AI transformation.

The dynamic duo is co-developing an intelligent conversational assistant that will anticipate customer financial needs before they even ask.

Even more revolutionary (or alarming) is their plan to create digital “alter egos”—AI systems that learn each employee’s working style and can execute tasks with their authorization and oversight, essentially creating a digital twin workforce.

The most disruptive development: BBVA is integrating its services directly into ChatGPT, allowing any user worldwide to interact with the bank through OpenAI’s platform—a move that could redefine banking accessibility overnight.

Rewriting finance

This partnership represents far more than one bank’s digital transformation—it’s possibly setting a new benchmark for the entire financial industry.

In fact, one in 50 employees at top banks are now working in AI-related roles as of seven months ago.

The bank’s comprehensive approach—including training 250+ senior executives and creating internal AI communities—provides a blueprint that other financial institutions might be inclined to copy.

Productivity and Peru

To give you more context, BBVA says its AI rollout has already delivered results.

Seven months ago, employees were reporting savings of nearly three hours per week on routine tasks, with some workflows showing efficiency improvements up to 80% according to OpenAI’s case study from last month.

But the adoption statistics tell an even more compelling story: 83% of licensed users engage with ChatGPT daily, creating over 20,000 custom AI assistants across the organization last month.

The most remarkable example? In Peru alone, an internal assistant used by 3,000+ employees reduced query handling time from 7.5 minutes to just one minute—an 87% time reduction that’s now being replicated globally.

The bank will also ramp up ChatGPT deployment from 3,000 to over 120,000 employees in less than two years. It’s all in the name of productivity gains.

OpenAI recently executed a power move, snagging former Slack CEO Denise Dresser to spearhead their revenue growth ambitions.
