Healthy Program

Oracle is teaming up with hospital operator HealthSouth to build a “digital hospital.” Oracle will incorporate Internet technologies into a new hospital being built in Birmingham, Ala., that will eliminate maddening paperwork, executives said.

Lotus Pushes Wireless

IBM subsidiary Lotus Development announced partnerships with wireless handset makers Ericsson and Nokia, aimed at improving access to business applications using new generations of smart phones. The phones built-in browsers use Wireless Application Protocol technology.

Viant Trims

Troubles continue for Internet systems integrators. This time, Boston-based Viant announced it is chopping its headcount by 211 employees, or 38 percent of its staff, and closing three offices. Viant also says it expects to post a larger-than-expected first-quarter loss.

Manugistics Stays on Track

Supply chain software specialist Manugistics Group offered the tech sector a dose of relief when it reported fourth-quarter results that met expectations and said it remains comfortable with Wall Street expectations for the rest of the fiscal year. Fourth-quarter earnings were $3.7 million, or 5 cents per share, and revenue was $89.3 million.

Gates Opens Tech Center

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates threw open the doors on a technology center in Silicon Valley last week. The center, the largest and most sophisticated of four centers operated by the software giant, acts as a place where Microsoft customers can build and test applications based on the .Net initiative.
