Google and Accel Launch New AI Startup Program in India

AI startups in India have received a welcome boost to their ambitions.

Google and Accel Atoms have announced a joint initiative aimed at fast-tracking the next generation of AI startups in the country.

The two organizations revealed a new Accel Atoms x AI Futures Fund cohort designed specifically for pre-seed founders looking to build next-generation AI applications.

According to the announcement, the program is seeking “visionary pre-seed founders ready to build bold AI applications,” underscoring how early in the startup lifecycle Google and Accel intend to engage with India’s emerging AI talent.

What participating startups will receive

Through the collaboration, selected companies will gain access to a package of support that combines capital, infrastructure, and technical expertise.

Startups will receive early access to Google DeepMind’s frontier models, described as offering “early usage of Google DeepMind’s advanced models, including Gemini, Imagen and Veo.” These models currently power capabilities in reasoning, multimodality, synthetic media generation, and software development.

Founders will also receive hands-on mentorship from engineering, product, and go-to-market experts from both Google and Accel. The program promises Google Cloud credits, technical support, and potential equity investment from both partners.

This structure mirrors the expanding model of AI-first startup accelerators worldwide, where access to compute and advanced models has become as important as funding itself.

India’s shifting role in global AI development

The initiative signals India’s growing importance in the global AI landscape. With one of the world’s largest developer communities and a rapidly expanding AI startup ecosystem, the nation is widely viewed as a region where large-scale AI adoption and innovation could accelerate quickly, particularly in sectors like healthcare, education, logistics, agriculture, and financial services.

By offering frontier-model access and cloud infrastructure at the earliest stages of company formation, Google and Accel are positioning India’s founders to compete in a market increasingly dominated by companies with access to massive compute resources. This could help close the innovation gap between Silicon Valley and emerging markets.

For Accel, which has backed several of India’s most successful technology companies, the program reflects a long-term bet on AI as the next defining wave of company creation on the subcontinent. For Google, it expands the reach of its AI Futures Fund, a global initiative aimed at supporting early-stage AI innovation.

Applications are now open through the Accel India portal, with the cohort beginning in February 2026.

Google expands AI footprint in Asia

The announcement comes alongside a series of moves by Google to deepen its AI presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Recent developments include the establishment of its largest hardware engineering hub outside the US in Taipei and the opening of a new Google DeepMind research lab in Singapore focused on advancing AI research for the region.

These investments suggest a coordinated strategy: building local capacity for AI development, strengthening technical infrastructure outside the US, and fostering early-stage innovation ecosystems across Asia.
