Microsoft has started to provide sneak peeks of the first technology to be hatched by its LiveLabs organization. Officials showed off the technology, code-named “PhotoSynth,” at the Microsoft Financial Analyst Meeting this week. They also are set to provide a preview next week at SIGGRAPH. PhotoSynth “takes a large collection of photos of a place or object, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed 3-Dimensional space.” The technology is the fruit of a collaboration between the University of Washington, Microsoft Research, the recent Microsoft acquisition Seadragon, the Windows Live Local group and members of Microsoft’s Photos and Imaging Experience team. PhotoSynth code is set to be available for download later this year.
