Mixed Results for BI Vendors in Latest Earnings

Business intelligence and analytics software vendors reporting quarterly earnings last week turned in a mixed bag. Revenues were generally up, but only CorVu Corp. turned a profit.

CorVu, best known for its balanced scorecard software, showed that its taking advantage of the business performance management trend, as it posted revenues of $3.89 million in its fiscal second quarter ended Dec. 31, up from $2.99 million in the same period the previous year.

The Minneapolis-based company also reported that it turned a $938,000 profit on that revenue, up from $210,000 in the prior years quarter.

Among other BI vendors:

  • Insightful Corp. reported Friday that fourth-quarter revenues remained nearly constant, falling from just $4.4 million to $4.3 million. License revenues climbed though, from $2.7 million to $3.4 million. The Seattle-based companys losses climbed slightly, from $982,000 to $1.1 million year-to-year.
  • Sagent Technology Inc. saw total fourth-quarter revenues fall year-to-year from $13.1 million to $8.5 million. License revenue was hardest hit, dropping from $8.5 million to $4.4 million. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company did shave its losses though from $10 million to $2.8 million and announced that it had settled shareholder lawsuits filed against it more than two years ago.
  • SPSS Inc. enjoyed a fourth-quarter revenue increase to $54 million from $48.2 million in 2001. That increase helped the Chicago-based company narrow its losses from $10.6 million to $2.3 million year-to-year.
