AMD To Counter Conroe With 4×4, Power Programs

AMD executives say they remain “supremely confident” in the strength of their own architecture, even though the launch of Intels Core 2 Duo or “Conroe” processor steals several pages from AMDs own book.

AMD executives said this week that they will promote its “4×4” enthusiast platform to counter the Core 2 Duo (C2D), while maintaining the companys healthy relationships with business and enterprise customers.

AMD also plans to push a sort of “performance number” into the market to redefine how consumers should think about power, they said.

Meanwhile, the company also plans price cuts, although a return to the heavy discounts the chipmaker once offered seem unlikely, an analyst said.

While imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, improvement can often be a slap in the face. Intels C2D was designed with both low power and performance per watt in mind, two key design metrics that helped AMD cut into Intels market share with the Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2.
