Compaq Computer Corp. is recalling about 1.4 million notebook adapters that the company said pose a potential fire hazard.

The Houston-based computer maker on Thursday ordered the recall of the AC adapters—with model series numbers PPP003SD, PPP003 and PP2012—after receiving five reports of fires that were contained to the adapter cases.

The fires were caused by the adapters overheating, the company said.

The adapters were sold as replacement parts and only to certain notebook computers: the Armada M300, M700, E500s, E500, V300, 100s, 110 and 3500; the Notebook 100; and the Prosignia 170, 190 and 800 (South Korea only).

The recall only involves adapters from one manufacturer. Compaq customers who return the adapters will get a replacement for free. For more information, go to www.compaq.com/products/notebooks/adapterrecall/.
