Dell Computer Corp. will now be known as Dell Inc., thanks to a shareholder vote on Friday approving the change.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in May, officials with the Round Rock, Texas, company said the corporate name change was necessary, given that the company has grown from simply selling computer hardware to offering a wide range of products, from servers and storage devices to personal digital assistants and services. The company also said that the world “Dell” is so well known that there is no need for the word “Computer” in the name.

According to a prepared statement, Chairman and CEO Michael Dell said during the shareholders annual meeting that the change to Dell Inc. enables the companys name to catch up with the way the company has evolved.
