Dell Computer Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. have both begun advertising workstations featuring Intel Corp.s yet-to-be-released 3.06GHz Xeon chip.

Dell, of Round Rock, Texas, is offering on its Web site its dual-processor Precision 450 and 650 workstations with the chip, which features a 533MHz front-side bus.

In addition, HP, of Palo Alto, Calif., is offering the Xeons in its xw6000 and xw8000 workstations, both of which are dual-processor systems.

Intel is expected to launch the newest Xeon—at speeds of 3GHz and 3.06GHz—later this quarter. Currently the fastest Xeon chips are clocked at 2.8GHz. The chips support DDR SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM).

The addition of the new Xeon chips is bumping up the prices on Dells and HPs workstations by at least $200, according to the Web sites.
