Dell Computer Corp. long ago outgrew the college dorm room where founder Michael Dell started the mail-order PC business. Now the Round Rock, Texas., company says it has outgrown the name, as well.

In a filing of its preliminary proxy statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, Dell said that it offers more than simply computers and the name should not pigeonhole the company. In addition to PCs, laptops and servers, Dell sells storage devices, printers, other technologies and professional services.

“Changing the companys name to “Dell Inc.” represents Dells evolution from strictly a computer hardware company to a diverse supplier of technology products and services,” the proxy stated.

In addition, the name “Dell” is simply so well known that there is little need for the word “Computers” in the corporate name, the filing said.

The name change will require approval of a majority of Dell Computer shareholders at the companys annual meeting. The Dell board recommends in the proxy an affirmative vote on the question.
