Ed Coleman, who came to Gateway as the CEO in 2006 and tried to steer the ailing PC company toward offering more server and storage products for the professional market, is leaving the company.

Coleman’s department, which was announced Dec. 14, comes after Gateway was acquired by Taiwan’s Acer for $710 million in August. The combined company is now expected to become one of the largest PC vendors in the world, but will mainly focus on consumer PCs, especially laptops.

Since the acquisition, Acer announced that it would sell Gateway’s professional division to MPC for $90 million. That part of the deal closed Oct. 2, according to both companies. In addition, Gateway is moving to buy Europe’s Packard Bell.

Coleman will stay with the company until the end of January 2008, according to a statement from Acer. At that time, Rudi Schmidleithner, who has worked with Acer’s Pan America Organization, will lead the company’s Gateway division.

Coleman, 55, has worked in the IT industry for more than 30 years, according to his Gateway biography. Before joining Gateway as the CEO, he served as the president of Enterprise Computing Solutions for Arrow Electronics.
