Hewlett-Packard announced that beginning Dec. 13 customers can register for a free Microsoft Windows Vista operating system upgrade, when it becomes available in early 2007.

Once customers request a Vista upgrade, they will receive a kit that includes a Vista upgrade DVD and an additional DVD that will include the drivers needed to complete the installation.

“HP began working with Microsoft in 2001, devoting thousands of hours of hardware and software testing and development to ensure consumers experience as an affordable, easy-to-follow upgrade path to the new Windows Vista operating system,” Mark Sanchez, vice president of consumer computing at HP, said in a company release.

HP Update, a platform that customers use to update their software, will download the appropriate software as well as user guides and troubleshooting tips to their PCs when used with Vista.

HP will also have new Vista drivers available through the HP support Web site for customers to download. HP hopes to update the Vista drivers page once additional drivers become available, enabling customers to access the most current versions.

Customers who have purchased HP Pavilion, Compaq Presario or HP Digital Entertainment Center PCs designated as Microsoft Windows Vista Capable will be eligible for the free Windows Vista Upgrade when it becomes available.
