Hewlett-Packard Co. on Monday is coming out with another Itanium 2-based workstation, this one aimed at design engineers.

The Palo Alto, Calif., company in September rolled out the single-processor zx2000 workstation running on Intel Corp.s 1GHz Deerfield chip, known as Low Voltage Itanium 2.

Now HP is offering another flavor of the zx2000, this one powered by Intels other low-voltage Itanium 2 chip, known internally as the DP (dual processor)-optimized Itanium 2. That chip runs at 1.4GHz, and like Deerfield offers 1.5MB of Level 3 cache.

According to company officials, the new one-way workstation is designed for projects that need more than 2GB of physical memory. The system can now handle product design tasks that require 8GB of memory, which is something that is difficult for 32-bit workstations to do.

“These are the folks who are designing planes, trains and automobiles,” said Rachel McClary, Itanium product marketing manager for HP. “Its offering Itanium to CAD [computer-aided design] engineers who didnt have Itanium capabilities before.”

With the new version of the workstation, the zx2000 now offers Itanium 2 chips at speeds of 900MHz, 1GHz and 1.4GHz and HPs own Scalable Processor Chipset zx1. The workstation runs HP-UX 11i 2.0, Red Hat Inc. Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1 for Itanium and Microsoft Corp.s Windows XP 64-bit Edition 2003 operating systems.

Its available immediately, starting at $6,734.
