Intel Corp. on Wednesday announced funding in two companies involved in “Wi-Fi” wireless LAN technology.

Through the Intel Communications Fund, the Santa Clara, Calif., chip maker is investing a minority stake in IP telephony software company TeleSym Inc., as well as providing additional funding to wireless network access company STSN Inc. Intel first invested in STSN in 1999. The company did not disclose the amount of the investments.

In October, Intel announced plans to invest $150 million in companies pursuing Wi-Fi technology, which includes anything related to the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standards.

The funds initial investment was in Cometa Networks, the joint venture wireless LAN public hot spot company that Intel, IBM and AT&T Corp. announced earlier this month.

Intel officials said the investments are meant to accelerate the acceptance of notebook chip sets that Intel plans to announce next year.

“STSNs and TeleSyms solutions will complement Intels next-generation mobile technology, code-named Banias, which will be introduced in the first half of 2003,” said John Hull, director of the Intel Communications Fund.
