Intel Corp. generated $7.2 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter, a 3 percent jump over the same period last year, the giant chip maker reported Tuesday.

The number also represented a 10 percent jump over the previous quarter.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company said its income for the quarter was $1.1 billion, a 6 percent increase over the same year-ago period.

The company was able to increase market share in everything from processors to chipsets to flash memory, CEO Craig Barrett said in a prepared statement.

For the entire fiscal year 2002, Intel garnered $26.8 billion in revenue, a 1 percent jump over 2001, with a net income of $3.1 billion, almost triple the $1.3 billion of the previous year.

Looking forward, Intel estimated revenue of $6.5 billion and $7 billion, even with a struggling economy that it said makes it difficult to predict product demand.

Officials also said the company will spend about $4 billion for new research and development in 2003, about the same as last year.

Intel is expected in the first half of the year to unveil its Centrino family of energy-efficient mobile technology, including the next generation of its mobile processor, code-named Banias. It also is expected this summer to release its next-generation Itanium 2 chip, code-named Madison.
