Motherboard maker Micro-Star International Co. (MSI) is offering a free upgrade to consumers worried that they may have been stuck with one of the bad Intel “Grantsdale” boards.

MSI said it will test and screen all upcoming boards using the Intel 925X “Alderwood” chip set or the two Grantsdale chip sets, the Intel 915P and 915G. However, the company is also offering consumers the option to return them.

Last week, Intel discovered that the ICH-6 component of the Grantsdale chip set may have been subject to a flawed manufacturing process. Although Intel officials claimed that no affected chip sets made it to the end market, MSI is apparently taking no chances.

If users want to replace or receive a full refund for their motherboards, they can. However, consumers purchasing either a 915P Neo2 Platinum, 915P Combo-FR or 915G Combo-FR MSI motherboard between June 21 and June 27 have the option of either returning the board via the normal RMA channels or upgrading to the MSI 925X Neo Platinum board for free.

“Many of you may be concerned about the recall from Intel regarding Southbridge ICH6/ICH6R flaws that can be found in Intel 925X/915P/915G chip set mainboards,” said Andy Tung, the companys senior product manager for motherboards, in an e-mailed statement. “As Taiwans Top Three and Worlds Top Five Mainboard manufacturer, MSI is working with Intel and our customers in finding the impacted manufacturing lots and taking further actions as follows.”

For instructions on where to send the replacement products, customers can contact the company at (626) 581-3001 between 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday, or via e-mail at msirma@msicomputer.com.

Users must have a printed sales receipt and must go through MSIs RMA channels with a postmark earlier than July 10, said company officials.
