Software maker Phoenix Technologies Ltd. is searching for a new CFO.

The 424-person company, which is best known for creating PC BIOS software, on Tuesday said Randy Bolten, its chief financial officer, has resigned.

Bolten, who had held the CFO post since June 2003, left to pursue other interests, Phoenix said in a statement.

“We thank Randy for his contributions to Phoenix and wish him well in his future endeavors. The search for a new CFO will begin immediately,” Albert Sisto, the companys CEO, said in a statement.

Phoenix Technologies claim to fame is being the largest of several BIOS (Basic Input Output System) software vendors. BIOS software is an important link between a PCs hardware and software. Its main duty is to start up components such as a PCs processor before its operating system takes over during the boot process.

Of late, the Milpitas, Calif., company has been working on advanced BIOS software called the Phoenix Core System Software, which includes a suite of BIOS software for desktops, notebooks and servers along with applications designed to allow PC makers to build special features, such as quick access to Microsoft Corp.s Outlook, into their new PCs.
