About 93,000 power adapters used with speakers packaged with Hewlett-Packard Co. business PCs are being recalled over concerns the products could pose a shock hazard to customers.

Philips Electronics, the manufacturer of the power adapters, ordered the recall after HP reported that the adapter plug was not grounded properly, the Consumer Products Safety agency reported yesterday. Its unclear whether a customer or HP workers initially identified the problem, but so far no injuries have been reported as a result of the faulty part.

HP said the speakers using the faulty adapter, identified as the P1534A External Amplified Speaker, were sold with HP Vectra desktop bundles, as well as individually, between October 2000 and April 2002.

The speakers can be identified by the model number P1534-60001 on a label attached to the bottom of each speaker. The black power adapter has “Model D12-1-A-950” and “Made in China” printed on a white label.

The safety commission said consumers should unplug the speakers. For a free replacement adapter, consumers can contact Philips Electronics at (800) 870-7193 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CDT Monday through Friday.
