Lost amid Apple’s glut of announcements today, I learned that Apple’s flagship wireless access point — the 802.11n-enabled Airport Extreme — is also getting a little refresh. According to Apple’s tech specs, the Airport Extreme is now Gigabit Ethernet-enabled on both the WAN uplink port and the three LAN switch ports. In my tests earlier this year, I found that the Airport Extreme could easily push in excess of 100M bps to a single client when using the 5GHz band, so owners of the updated model could theoretically squeeze a few more drops of performance out of their networks now. But most of the benefit derived will be for wired clients, as they should now have much faster connectivity without the need for a separate switch. The Airport Extreme still costs $179.
