Whether you like the idea or not, it’s clear that many IT jobs in the years to come are going to be on a contract or consultant basis. I was woefully unprepared for my first real consulting gig when I landed it in the mid-‘90s, and the experience gave me a kick in the pants that ached until I drifted into journalism. But I came across some wise words about the world of consulting over the weekend, on a site that isn’t normally listed among the places to go for career information.

Unlike a lot of the “how to be a consultant” items which pass for advice, this essay has some rather practical points, such as the difference between being on a W2 contract and being a B2B contractor (which the author calls “C2C”), the need for E&O coverage in the latter scenario, and four questions to answer before you take the big plunge.
