Finally, Motorola is gearing up to release a pair of handsets powered by Google’s Android operating system. The Motorola Calgary seems destined to be first out of the gate and will also have the distinction of being the first Android phone carried by Verizon, according to Brighthand.

The report speculates:

“If the Calgary really is based on Android, it will have a highly-functional web browser, and includes tie-ins to a number of this company’s online services, like Gmail and Google Maps. There is also a rapidly growing collection of third-party software available for this operating system.“

The second Android-powered Motorola is dubbed Ironman, which is rumored by Boy Genius to “sport a screamin’ CPU and have pretty much every feature under the sun — Wi-Fi, 3G, high-resolution camera, etc.”

By now, everyone should realize that Android doesn’t just have potential as a major player — it will be one of only two or three leaders in a very short time (joining Symbian, Apple’s mobile OS and maybe — maybe — Windows).

The big news here is that Motorola may have found a way to rescue its foundering handset business, which last enjoyed a hit when it released Razr into the wild way back when.
