Great news for Google Voice users.
The phone calling application, which lets users route phone calls to several phones using one phone number, will now allow users to receive photos and other multimedia messages from Sprint subscribers.
Google said any multimedia attachments will display on their mobile forwarding phone and in their email inbox when they enable text-to-email forwarding in their Google Voice settings. The company will also make the photos display in users’ Google Voice inbox.
That gives Google Voice some of the multimedia content magic enjoyed by users of mobile applications such as Twitter for Android or Facebook for Android.
Of course, limiting the MMS content to be facilitated by people sending content from Sprint Android phones is, well, quite limiting.
Yet it’s also understandable. Sprint has been the only carrier not to show a reticence to accept Google Voice on its smartphones. And that’s only since March, when Sprint began including the app on its Nexus S Android 2.3 Gingerbread handsets and allowing users to use their Google Voice number on the phone.
Google said it is working with other mobile operators to make MMS content receivable from all mobile phones in the future.
Meanwhile, Google apparently yanked Voice for iOS devices from Apple’s App Store following a bug with the new iOS 5.
According to Engadget, Google Voice Senior Product Manager Vincent Paquet said Google didn’t want the problem to spread before it could provide a fix.
Fair enough.
