It seemed like a match made in heaven. Google, long the wonky bastion of the geeky set, was rumored to have acquired the geekiest gizmo known to man.

Scuttlebutt was that Google had purchased SpaceShipOne, the suborbital spaceplane that made history with the first privately-funded spaceflight in 2004, and set it on display at their Mountain View headquarters.

Almost, but not quite.

As Techcrunch reported on Saturday, Google does have SpaceShipOne on display at their HQ, but it’s actually a full scale replica, not the original.

Photos here, here and here.

And to think I was happy when our office got a second soda machine. Google must be in some kind of office swag arms race. The only way to have an office cooler than Google’s is to actually work in the ball pit at Chucky Cheese’s. With like, naked chicks and stuff.
