Targeted at small to midsize businesses, McAfees VirusScan ASaP managed-desktop, anti-virus service automatically delivers updates to customers using a peer-to-peer approach.

VirusScan ASaP, which debuted in June, protects networks from known and unknown viruses and is available for most versions of Windows. Prices start at $2 to $4 per node per month.

Once installed on a network, VirusScan ASaP agent software automatically checks for virus updates each time a user logs on to a network. If it finds a workstation on the network that has the latest update installed, it enables that workstation to transfer updates to other machines on a P2P basis via McAfees Rumor P2P technology.

If no workstation has the latest update, VirusScan ASaP enables the desktop to log on to the McAfee Network Operations Center to download the update.

Deploying the service was easy: I clicked on the link; a pop-up window appeared and asked for my e-mail address; and, once that was verified, the product went to work. Once Virus-Scan ASaP was installed, I could keep tabs on anti-virus stats through the services detailed Web-based reporting.
