Three major security vendors on Monday joined forces to create what theyre calling an “intrusion prevention ecosystem.”
The alliance, which brings together Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., IntruVert Networks Inc. and Okena Inc., presents a formidable combination of technologies and marketing power. At its simplest level, the partnership involves IntruVert and Okena integrating their respective solutions with Check Points VPN-1 and FireWall-1 products to provide intrusion protection and detection capabilities for large enterprises.
IntruVert, of San Jose, Calif., will contribute its IntruShield technology, which combines signatures, anomaly detection and denial-of-service protection. For its part, Okena, based in Waltham, Mass., will bring in its StormSystem intrusion prevention technology.
The new solutions will include functionality that allows an administrator to set and enforce policies according to activity, attack severity or response action needed.
Intrusion prevention has become the latest buzzword in the security industry, and is now applied to everything from simple firewalls to complex systems comprising numerous components. The only point on which everyone seems to agree is that intrusion prevention is not intrusion detection. Typical intrusion prevention systems like those from Okena and IntruVert employ a combination of intrusion detection techniques—such as anomaly detection and signature matching—and add the ability to stop in-progress attacks, as well.
Both IntruVert and Okena will demo the Intrusion Prevention Ecosystem at their booths during this weeks Networld + Interop show in Atlanta.
