Security intelligence is a hot buzzword in the modern IT marketplace, but it’s a term that means different things, depending on the vendor and the context. Security vendor Digital Shadows has a specific viewpoint on security intelligence, with a goal to provide cyber situational awareness.

Digital Shadows announced the release of its Digital Shadows SearchLight technology on Sept. 21, providing a platform that organizations can use to understand and find potential data leaks.

In a video interview with eWEEK, Alastair Paterson, CEO and co-founder of Digital Shadows, provides insight into the challenge his company is trying to solve.

“We provide cyber situational awareness to clients, which is a combination of what they look like online, what they are exposing to the Internet as their attack surface and also what the bad guys are doing in relation to them,” Paterson told eWEEK.

In the modern organization, traditional boundaries for IT no longer exist as users bring their own devices and information exists in multiple locations. The Digital Shadows technology is a monitoring technology that analyzes a company’s digital footprint and then finds anything that presents a risk to the organization.

From a technology perspective, Digital Shadows makes use of a wide range of techniques and tools. Technologies used include Hadoop, MongoDB and Elasticsearch.

“We’re literally just sucking in the open content on the Internet, so we’re not trying to breach anyone’s privacy or security,” Paterson said.

The SearchLight technology includes enterprise features for chief information security officers (CISOs) such as a portfolio view that provides a full view of an organization.

“So if you have a large enterprise with many subsidiaries, you can see how they are performing relative to each other from a data loss and threat point of view,” Paterson said.
