Today’s topics include facial recognition showing promise in corporate security, and Seagate releasing a fast 2TB solid-state disk for laptops and desktops.

It only took a matter of minutes for investigators to identify the man they had in custody for the Capital Gazette newspaper shootings thanks to Maryland’s new facial recognition system.

This is one example of how well facial recognition systems can identify a random person fairly reliability.

What’s equally important is that this is one form of biometric technology that doesn’t require a lot of expensive hardware to implement nor does it require direct interaction of an individual with a card reader, biometrically controlled door lock or similar technology.

This technology could be used to bolster corporate and data center security systems by using existing surveillance cameras as part of a biometric security system.

Seagate on July 3 unveiled a new internal BarraCuda solid-state disk designed to take data movement inside PCs to a higher-than-normal speed level with flash media and a SATA 6GB/s interface.

This disk includes features that beat just about every hard drive out there. The BarraCuda SSD maximizes drive performance and is equipped with flash-speed function up to 560MB/s and 90K IOPs that accelerates boost time, file transfers and application loading.

It comes with a five-year warranty, and offers versatility with multiple capacity options and a standard 2.5-inch form factor. It is optimized for maximum capacity and equipped with ultra-low power mode support for reduced power consumption.

The new internal solid-state disk will be available on Amazon exclusively starting on July 16, prior to general availability in September.
