Given the amount of information customers must provide when ordering goods and services online, privacy compliance is a key issue for companies doing business on the Internet. Management software vendor Watchfire Inc., of Lexington, Mass., and New York-based services provider PricewaterhouseCoopers co-developed software that enables businesses to monitor privacy compliance on the Internet, intranets and extranets.

Watchfire WebCPO, announced this month, may help businesses better understand the collection, use and sharing of data, the companies said. Watchfire WebCPO also sends alerts—via wireless devices, e-mail and network broadcasts—to executives when changes are made to privacy-sensitive areas of a Web site.

Watchfire WebCPO automatically scans Web pages, on demand or at timed intervals, for potential privacy compliance problems.

The tool is available now, and pricing starts at $15,000.
