Pervasive Software Inc. on Tuesday rolled out the beta of an update to its embeddable database engine thats bristling with security enhancements.

Pervasive.SQL V8 Security comes with a unified security model thats designed to protect critical data across Pervasive.SQL access interfaces, down to the operating system. The release also features enhanced encryption of data as it travels through a network. That path through a technology stack encompasses the application layer, the network, the database and the operating system. The enhanced encryption will help prevent capture of data as it moves through those layers, said officials at the Austin, Texas, company.

The update provides configurable backward compatibility with existing Btrieve and Pervasive.SQL applications, with no additional development required, officials said.

The update will be generally available later in the year. Its a free upgrade for those whove already purchased Pervasive.SQL V8. For others, costs depend on what theyre upgrading from and how many seats they purchase. For example, upgrading from Version 2000i would cost $595 for 10 users.

The beta download is available now from the companys site.
