IRVINE, Calif. -Data protection service provider Datacastle March 12 announced the availability of what it claims to be the first software-as-a-service package for midmarket businesses that combine continuous data protection with data security and vulnerability mitigation features.

The 3-year-old Seattle-based company, which sells its software through ISPs, made the announcement here at the Data Protection Summit.

Datacastle is the only company with state-of-the-art 256-bit, random-generated key encryption technology that ensures compliance and privacy by encrypting both the data files as well as the metadata and file hierarchy, spokesperson Lori Marshall told eWEEK.

Other data protection services do not encrypt file and folder hierarchy and metadata, allowing insight to the information being protected and therefore violating data privacy regulations, Marshall said.

Datacastle is the only service with patent-pending master encryption key escrow system that ensures that the key is encrypted multiple times and not stored in the clear for service providers or hackers to access, Marshall said.

Service providers cannot be held liable for data stored in their environments, because they cannot access that data unless the user agrees, Marshall added.
