The Science of Security

Netsec, a provider of managed security services in Herndon, Va., says it has been awarded a multiyear contract to provide services to the National Science Foundation, the U.S. government agency that promotes and funds science and engineering research. Under the contract — financial terms of which were not disclosed — the NSF will use Netsecs Network Security Operations Center and Government Services Group to provide remote management and monitoring of intrusion detection systems, as well as ongoing vulnerability assessments and security analysis.

Hot Rods

Nokia and iPolicy Networks both recently announced superfast security appliances designed for large enterprise and service provider networks. Nokias IP740 comes with Check Point Software Technologies VPN-1/FireWall-1 software installed and operates at more than 1.5 gigabits per second, according to Nokia. A similar device from iPolicy, the ipEnforcer 5000, due this fall, applies security software from Elron Software, McAfee.com and Symantec. It purportedly operates at speeds up to 2 Gbps. Nokia has not released pricing information; iPolicys device will start at $99,000.
