Security appliance vendor SonicWall Inc. on Thursday announced the resignation of its CEO, Cosmo Santullo. The company appointed Mike Roach, vice president of partners, alliances and strategic accounts, to fill the position on an interim basis.

Santullo joined the Sunnyvale, Calif., company last year and has been commuting between the companys headquarters and his home near Boston for nearly a year. In a statement, Santullo said his decision to resign was based on his desire to stay in Massachusetts. Santullo also resigned from the board of directors.

A veteran of both EMC Corp. and IBM Corp., Santullo joined SonicWall in October from content-delivery firm Mirror Image Internet Inc.

Roach was a candidate for the CEO position during SonicWalls search last year and will be considered to take over the job on a permanent basis, company officials said.

SonicWall expects to take a one-time charge of about $500,000 as a result of the CEO changeover.

The company, which makes integrated security appliances with firewall, VPN, content filtering and anti-virus functionality, recently reported second quarter earnings of $0.04, a sharp drop from the $0.08 it reported during the same period last year.
