Whaleback ‘Terminates’ VOIP Security Threats

Managed voice over IP service provider Whaleback Systems picked up the security drumbeat on April 7 with the addition of a new VOIP firewall to its service.

Whaleback, which sits in between hosted VOIP service providers and IP PBX vendors with its on-premise managed IP Telephony service, added new voice-application-aware firewall technology and session border control functions to its service, which is aimed primarily at SMEs (small- and medium-sized enterprises).

“The system knows what type of packets should be coming to it. It terminates all traffic coming into the building, so it doesn’t have to allow anything to flow through it. There is no way for security threats to get through that system,” said Mark Galvin, CEO of the Portsmouth, N.H., service provider.
