Novell and SWsoft have partnered to combine Novells SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 with SWSofts Virtuozzo virtualization software, to deliver an integrated virtualization server, SWSoft announced today.

Novell has long used Xen virtualization in its SLES open platform. With this augmented version of SLES, uses will have the choice of using either Virtuozzo or Xen for their virtualization needs.

SWsoft itself has extended virtualization software to many operating systems, such as MacOS and Solaris. SWsofts Virtuozzo is built on the foundation of Linux-based OpenVZ virtualization software. OpenVZ is available for many Linux distributions such as Debian, Sun, and 64-bit Power architecture.

With Virtuozzo, SWsoft said, a single Linux operating system instance can be dynamically partitioned into multiple, highly efficient and scalable virtual environments. “Virtuozzo includes patented technology that enables density of up to hundreds of virtual environments on a single physical server” the company claims.

SWsoft expects to start shipping the Virtuozzo and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 bundle in the second quarter of this year. It will run on servers using x86, AMD64, EM64T, and Itanium processors. Support for the software bundle will be provided by SWsoft, and “backed up, as necessary, by Novell for all the unmodified components of SLES,” SWsoft said.
