Actuate Corp., rumored to be a takeover target in the consolidating business intelligence space, announced an acquisition of its own Tuesday, picking up data integration software developer Nimble Technology Inc.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Nimble was founded in 1999 following a 5-year research project in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington.

Nimble, based in Seattle, develops an XML-based data integration platform that utilizes XQuery to simplify data integration when building Web services and business intelligence applications.

Actuate officials said the Nimble technology would make it easier for Actuates enterprise reporting customers to design information applications that provide an integrated view of their business, while making it easier for Actuates Information Application Platform to integrate with a broad range of XML-enabled systems, officials said.

“Our emphasis remains upon enabling our customers to build and deploy scaleable BI applications and this acquisition gives them limitless options to rapidly leverage all kinds of data in a cost effective, yet scaleable fashion,” said Actuate CEO Pete Cittadini in a statement.

Nimble CTO Denise Draper said in a statement that Nimbles technology would allow Actuate customers to build reporting applications on “relational databases, proprietary systems, data warehouses, flat files, Web pages, and more.”

The deal is valued at less than $10 million, according to an Actuate spokeswoman.
