EMC Clears Paper Clutter with Document Archive Services

Adding another component to its enterprise archiving software portfolio, EMC on May 16 introduced its new EMC Documentum Archive Services for Imaging at the AIIM Conference & Exposition in Philadelphia.

The technology is designed to help customers reduce and manage the large volumes of paper records and documents taking up valuable physical space within their organizations.

Currently available, EMC Documentum Archive Services for Imaging is packaged software that combines EMC Captiva InputAccel document capture software—leveraging technology from EMCs $275 million purchase of Captiva Software in 2005—with the unified EMC Documentum archiving platform.

The technology converts paper documents to stored electronic images while implementing search and discovery, secure access and information rules to reduce potential loss of data spread across various parts or departments within an enterprise, said Lubor Ptacek, director of product marketing, EMC Software Group, for the Hopkinton, Mass., company.

Ptacek said that companies are growing weary of problems associated with storing and maintaining mountains of vital paper documents, including the cost of keeping paper organized and in boxes, which can quickly translate into shrinking office space and real estate.

“I think the biggest challenge today [for customers] is to be able to find things again. Many understand there is a compliance side to retain my data, however the compliance requirements implies if it gets audited or a legal challenge arises, you have to find the data in a very short period of time,” said Ptacek.

“Thats where most people struggle today. They havent really thought about archiving upfront and to be able to go back and find something on a moments notice, thats where they struggle,” he remarked. EMCs unified archiving software platform features support of EMCs Centera CAS (content addressed storage), EMC Clarion and EMC Symmetrix storage systems.

The Documentum Archive Services family also enables archiving for e-mail systems, reports and SAP content within the portfolio.
