EMC Corp. on Friday filled its ranks by appointing longtime IBM executive Jeffrey M. Nick to serve as the storage giants senior vice president and chief technology officer. EMC has been without a full-time CTO for more than a year.

In his new role at Hopkinton, Mass.-based EMC, Nick will use his CTO and senior vice president mantle to drive EMCs Office of Technology, which is responsible for galvanizing EMCs technology strategy and vision, as well as working with industry partners to develop new standards. Nick will report directly to Howard Elias, EMC vice president of corporate marketing and the Office of Technology, EMC officials said.

Mark Lewis, who served as EMC CTO until the third quarter of 2003, left the position vacant when he became president of the EMC Software Group. In Lewis absence, Howard Elias has been running the CTO position from within the Office of Technology, according to an EMC spokesman.

Before leaving IBM in June of this year, Nick had amassed a number of achievements in his 24 years at the Armonk, N.Y.-based company, where he began at the software-engineer level but reached IBM fellow status. Most recently, Nick helped design and architect IBMs On-Demand initiative and also led IBMs Grid Computing strategy.
