Fortifying its focus to bring security deeper into storage environments and thereby building a unified information management lifecycle strategy, EMC acquired privately held Kashya on May 9 in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $153 million.

A maker of remote heterogeneous replication and data protection software, San Jose, Calif.-based Kashya will be integrated immediately into the growing EMC Software Group. EMC plans to meld Kashyas CDP (continuous data protection), recovery management and security application offerings with its own virtualization capabilities to help safeguard data facing increasing regulatory demands and evolving threats.

In particular, storage customers can expect to see EMCs Invista network-based block storage virtualization offering take advantage of Kashyas disaster recovery and snap replication technology. Further driving the red-hot CDP market, EMC will use Kashyas CDP tools as the engine in future releases of EMC RecoverPoint software.

EMCs software development efforts overseas will get a boost from having Kashya in the fold as well, as the data protection companys Israel-based research and development operation will form the core of the new EMC Israel Software Development Center, said officials of Hopkinton, Mass-based EMC.

Founded in December 2000, Kashya has built its reputation on the strength of its Kashya Data Protection Appliance and the KBX5000, its second-generation product responsible for providing security against a number of data center failures and attacks, as well as supporting storage consolidation efforts.
