With the capability to burn as much as 8.5GB of data onto a single disk, LaCies d2 DVD±RW Double Layer Drive will be a popular tool for backing up data and DVD videos.
The d2 DVD±RW Double Layer Drive, which began shipping last month, has a reasonable price of $249, which will make it competitive with other external double-layer DVD burners.
In my tests, I found that the d2 DVD±RW Double Layer Drive and its bundled software, Roxios Easy Media Creator 7, were relatively easy to use.
The bundled Easy Media Creator suite let me burn dual-layer disks easily; the drive also comes with Roxios Toast Lite 6.0.6 disk-burning software for Mac OS users.
However, I noticed in tests that my older disk-burning software, InterVideos DVD Copy, wasnt capable of dual-layer burning. IT departments will likely have to invest in newer revisions of their DVD-burning software if they dont want to use the bundled software.
I used Verbatims DVD+R DL disks as my test media and was able to burn at the maximum dual-layer 2.4X burning speeds. The d2 DVD±RW Double Layer Drive also supports 8X DVD+R and 8X DVD-R burn speeds for single-layer recordings.
LaCies d2 DVD±RW Double Layer Drive has USB 2.0 and FireWire ports to connect to PCs and servers.
