Mercury Interactive Corp. has added passive monitoring to its Topaz tool for active Web application performance testing.

In a new, more modular version, Topaz gains passive monitoring through the Topaz Observer agent, which can be downloaded into a target machine. Users can define the transactions to monitor. Observer then measures response time and availability and gathers information about system parameters on the desktop, said officials at the Sunnyvale, Calif., company.

Mercury has also reorganized the performance data reporting capabilities of its product lineup, allowing its multipoint tools to report the data they gather to a central Topaz console. In addition, Topaz now includes an Open Data Source application interface that allows data from enterprise management systems to be displayed on the console. Topaz data can be exported to those systems.

Also, Mercury introduced Topaz Rent-a-Pop, which gives customers access to its network of host machines placed on major backbones on the Internet for direct control of gathering performance management data.

Topaz Rent-a-Pop will be available July 1, starting at $6,000 per month. Topaz Console and Topaz Observer are available now and are priced starting at $650 and $5,000 per month, respectively.
