The slow but steady path to storage over IP was paved another mile today, with QLogic Corp. certifying its latest host-bus adapters for Veritas Software Corp.s midrange backup product.

QLogics SANblade, QLA4010 and QLA4040, announced last fall, are gradually gaining industry support. They are already certified for Mountain View, Calif.-based Legato Systems Inc.s Networker 7.0 backup software, officials said.

For now, Veritas, also of Mountain View, specifically chose to iSCSI-enable its Backup Exec 9.0 software first, because midrange storage is expected to gain customer traction before high-end storage, where Fibre Channel is entrenched, a spokesman said.

Veritas support for its high-end NetBackup software will come soon, officials added.

Numerous other iSCSI implementations, including those from traditional Fibre Channel array vendors, are expected this summer, to coincide with Microsoft Corp.s launch of an iSCSI update for Windows Server 2003, noted Ryan Klein, certifications manager for Qlogic, in Aliso Viejo, Calif.

Although the major iSCSI standards were approved earlier this year, minor obstacles and amendments still remain, standards body officials have said.
