RSA Security Inc. on Thursday announced that it will be extending its ClearTrust Web single sign-on product to the mainframe environment later this year. The new extension is designed to allow users to access data stored on legacy systems without having to re-authenticate.

The move into the mainframe world is a departure for RSA, a company that has always been focused mainly on client and end-user security solutions. In moving toward the world of big iron, RSA enters a market that has seen little in the way of security innovation in some time.

The connection between the mainframe and front-end applications will be performed by the ClearTrust Mainframe Data Adapter. The MDA gives users access to mainframe datastores and can then apply and enforce rules for the use of the data. This provides direct access to the data, eliminating the need to create secondary databases.

RSA, based in Bedford, Mass., is also developing an agent for IBMs HTTP Server on its OS/390 operating system. The agent will give users direct access to Web-based mainframe applications via single sign-on and can also handle this operation together with access to non-mainframe Web applications.

The third piece of the ClearTrust mainframe extension uses OpenConnect Systems Inc.s WebConnect technology to deliver access to non-Web-based applications for Web users.

RSA plans to have the MDA for IBMs RACF, Computer Associates International Inc.s ACF2 and TopSecret available in the third quarter. A version for DB2 will follow in the fourth quarter. The agent for OS/390 and the OpenConnect solution are available now.

Each piece is priced separately.
